"What do you mean?"
"I mean I hardly ever do the same thing twice." Ammi murmurs, sighing as she rolls to lay on her back "I always mix it up. My appearance, my personality. Like when you met me, I had decided a decade or so before I wanted a family. Now that I've learned it was a terrible mistake, I won't go down that road again, it's not worth the pain."

Rouke purses his lips in understanding and looks down at his hands, though his small smile remains. "Sometimes trying things again brings about better results."

"You sound as if you want one." Ammiras murmurs, brief smile touching her lips before it fades, gaze shadowing "Why don't you?"

"You sound as if you want one. Why don't you?"
"Because the pain and fear outweighs the rest," he says quietly, putting the sheet music to the side. "A lesson hard learned is one that's hard to forget."
The man was silent a moment, thoughtful, as his gaze studied the notes on the paper beside him. A hand traced their path while the other held his instrument skillfully. He realize that just as little as he knew about Ammiras, there was just as little as she knew of him. The last couple of years had been kind to him-- his music picked up. Someone came in to his life that offered a little more light. Sleep graced him with it's presence a little more now than it used to. The world felt a little less heavy than it was before, and it gave Rourke the space to think about everything he neglected to think on or consider in the past.
Family was one of those things.
"There was a time where I had a family," came the admission after quite some time. Rourke stood and began to put away his work, having decided he rehearsed enough for the day. The other part was to busy himself as he started to open the box from the past that he shoved away.

Listening to him, Ammiras pauses before she sits up and turns so her feet slide off the bed to hit the floor. Standing, she walks to him, hand slowly landing on his shoulder "What happened?"

"What happened?"
Rourke pursed his lips, gaze remaining forward as a hand came and touched hers on his shoulder. He gave it a gentle squeeze, thoughts momentarily drifting back to what he once had: a wife, a little girl, a happy home, peace. He grew complacent and comfortable, and it resulted in everything getting snatched away.
"I failed to protect them," he said quietly. "Being a haltija, some beings will take aim, as I generally stood between them and whatever their target may have been. There was a target I failed to see on my family, and in turn, I lost them." The grip tightened a little, and he took a breath. "The fear since then has kept me from truly living, for lack of better words. I don't know if I could trust myself again."

"I failed to protect them. Being a haltija, some beings will take aim, as I generally stood between them and whatever their target may have been.
Grasping his hand tighter in reassurance, Ammiras goes to say something before she stiffens as her right iris turns white, free hand slipping over her eye quickly to hide it as images flood her brain. Exhaling silently when the onslaught stops, she looks at him as her hand drops from her face in revelation at what she sees

"Rourke. There's still-" Words faltering, she blinks, eye returning to normal as she hesitates at telling him due to his last statement What if it's better for him not to know? After a moment of simple pondering, she shakes her head, knowing she would want to know if their roles were reversed, he deserves the truth "Rourke." she starts again, turning him to face her slightly, lips pursing

"Rourke. There's still-"
He paused, gaze raising from its stare-down with the floor.
"Rourke."
There was something in her voice that betrayed her. He let her hand guide him, his gaze meeting hers after a moment, searching, though his brows where drawn together slightly before he offered a small, apologetic smile. "Sorry, I'm doing it again. Dwelling on what once was and forgetting to be in the present."

Head shaking before he can even finish speaking, Ammiras slides her hands down and grips his gently, gaze finding the ground before it returns to him, quiet "Not everything you once had is lost." she murmurs, tone wavering as she hesitates "That woman that you were with, she had a daughter-didn't she?"

Rourke's gaze studied her and her movements, realizing that there was something more to what she was thinking than he saw. His fingers gently tightened on hers as she looked back up, searching her face for an answer, though once she spoke it slapped him. Hard.
"What do you mean?" his voice was quiet, wavering.
Then, at her response, he stiffened a little. Rourke felt the breath being squeezed in his chest as he freely let himself remember the past. "She did," the man replied breathlessly. "She was the light of our world." There was a pause. "Why do you ask?"

"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I.." Ammiras starts before her voice falters at the tremble in his, gaze finding the wall for a moment as she gathers her bearings
"She did. She was the light of our world. Why do you ask?"
Exhaling shakily, Ammiras turns to look at him slowly, swallowing the lump in her throat as her right iris turns white again "Rourke, there's a reason why I've lived this long, and why people call me the undertaker, why I'm so good with handling the dead. It's not what you would think, I'm not in tune with my job because I'm a skin changer. I'm in tune because I've experienced death, over and over again. To the point where over the past decade I've gained the ability to see threads. Some people call them the threads of fate, if you will. Who you know, who you will meet, decisions you make, even when you die. They are all different colors. Some are stronger than others, depending on your relations with each and every person who has entered your life at some point. And Rourke.. That girl you speak of? She's alive."

Threads of fate? Rourke studied her as she spoke, his green gaze wavering with uncertainty as she explained herself. Though, when she mentioned his daughter, his eyes widened and he shook his head quickly, looking away. "There's no way, I've tried looking for her in the beginning. There wasn't a clue, a sign, nothing." His shoulders rose and fell with an unsteady breath. "After everything I tried to do, the people I spoke to, things I've done, it doesn't make any sense. It's not possible."
In truth, there was the painful ache of hope in his chest as it reignited what Rourke tried to push away so long ago. He could feel the flutter, the tightness in his chest and the air in his stomach, and he did all he could to shove it away.
"It's not possible," he repeated, but more quietly.

Gaze wavering, Ammiras steps to him-hand finding his arm "Rourke, I.. I don't know about the past, or what happened. But there is one other thread connected to you, besides mine. It's wavering, but it's there. However," she continues, eyes closing briefly then opening again to lock gazes with him "If you wish for me to drop the topic, I will, and you'll never hear about it again."

Rourke stood still, registering her hand on his arm. There wasn't a sound or movement from him for a long time as he toiled with the thoughts tumbling around in his brain. Another steadying breath, though it didn't steady his voice. "I would be lying if I said I didn't want to know," it started. "I just... I don't know how this will go." He stepped back to the bed, falling heavily on it. "I lost the hope in trying to correct my mistake, to hope that there was still a chance. But turning up with nothing after all these years until now..."
Silence stretched on, his dark hazel gaze troubled as the corners of his eyes tightened. A hand rested over his mouth as he sat hunched forward. After all this time, he nearly forgot their faces, and the fear of losing it all was greater than the guilt, the shame. He needed to know. He needed to know how she was, how she grew up. About her mother. What became of them after he failed to find them? There was a great deal of anxiety in his stomach, and an arm wrapped around it. Would she see him as a failure, too?
"Tell me," came Rourke's response some time later, voice low and unsteady. His hand lowered. "I have to know."

Gaze wavering, Ammiras drops her arm as he backs away, lips thinning a moment before she speaks carefully "It could go one of two ways. She'll either accept you, or she won't."
"Tell me. I have to know."
Locking eyes with him, she exhales then walks to him, ending up on her knees just in front of him, gaze following the thread as it shifts "Her name is Evalyn. She's in her early 20's, and she's only just recently discovered she's not human." studying the thread, she falls silent with a frown the more she sees, deciding to discuss some things later she continues "She's been alone for so long, hidden from the rest of the world by a spirit, so no danger could find her. But now that cloak is gone. And Rourke?" her head raises, right eye swirling white "If she ever needed you, it's now."
