Quan doesn't even flinch, eyes shadowed as he doesn't move, gaze on the ground. "It's complicated," he murmurs after a moment, taking a breath as he looks at her again, raising the rag to clean the cut on her head.

He takes an uneasy breath, back to her as a hand goes to his hip, the other pressing against his forehead as he struggles. "In exchange for my life being saved by the first ring master, I became bound to the circus as his and his family's protector. After that lined died and the circus changed hands, I...." He looks up, letting out a breath. "I fell in love. But just as soon as it happened, she was stolen, and again I was left with the circus. Three decades ago, a man came to me from Clubs." Quan takes a breath, hand dropping as his shoulders slump. "He had a baby with him and had come to Kayle for help. But, she couldn't do what he was asking of her. So she called on me, the only one who had been with the circus to know how the five kingdoms, now districts, work. And I've been tethered ever since."
